On Monday we started our school year. You might be wondering why October instead of August or September like the rest of the country. The short answer? Because it's what works best for our family. It's one of the awesome things about homeschooling. We can set our schedule the way we like!
We started the morning with chocolate caramel pancakes and then explored all the new school supplies. He loves the colored pencil kit and the water color kit that I picked up from the art store and can't wait to use them.
When that was picked back up, we went through our curriculum. We have some new ones this year and some returning favorites. As we went through the curriculum, we made notes in our planner about what kind of goals we wanted to set for the year. Most of them are "finish the book" type goals, but I tried to include more tangible goals that should come with finishing the book. He chose some goals as well, and in some areas he is really pushing himself to do well. I was happy to see this.
At this point, our morning was half over. We dove into our Bible program and followed it with Hebrew flashcards and a half hour of Khan Academy for math. {He ended up with his first taste of long division! I found it ironic that he was learning such a 'hard' thing on the first day of school!}
This is when our fun really started. We had a quick lunch and then headed out the door to a 'surprise'. That surprise happened to be frozen yogurt at a local place with friends!
Then we headed for a local-ish state park to do some letterboxing! It was our first time, so we were happy to go with friends who had been before. It was a blast!
What's the next clue say?
Looking, looking....
Found it!
It was a fun day and I think it set a good tone for our year. I don't want school to be dreaded but rather savored and enjoyed.
