Homeschool Mother's Journal ~ October 13, 2013

In my life this week…
I've been focusing a lot on my blogging this week. I've been trying to write more and grow my readership. Of course, being busy and then not feeling well on Friday/Saturday has not helped me write more! I'm attempting to get ahead of the game today (Sunday).

The rest of my time this week was focused on our first week of homeschooling!

In our homeschool this week…
Our first week went super well! After a fun, laid back first day, we jumped into almost all of our curriculum. The main focus was just on getting into a routine and learning how to work all our different curricula. Part of the routine we are trying to establish is the control Bug has on his day. I'm encouraging him to be a self-starter and do what he can to get his day complete. He doesn't need to wait on me to transition from one thing to another.

We took up history where we left off last year, starting with "The End of the World" or the Black Death. Bug had read quite a bit about this as we had checked out some books before the Feast on this topic.  He enjoyed finally reading it from SOTW.

Bug took to the new Latin curriculum very well. We had fun learning the first chant, especially after I found this YouTube video. We also were pleased to see that we remembered most of our Hebrew Aleph-Bet and quickly picked up the ones we'd forgotten.

Language Arts, our most added to subject, Bug didn't complain about any of it. I really think that allowing it to be independent and self-controlled helped a lot. We'll see if the good attitude continues!

Bible Road Trip also seems to be a great fit.  It's simple and really led to some thinking on his part, which I love. He really put some time and thought into his project on Thursday. He was worried about not being able to complete the rest of school, but I explained that if he's working really hard on one subject that he doesn't need to stress about completing the rest. Especially when that one subject is Bible!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
Allow your child to put all their time and thought into one subject if that is what they want. The results can be fabulous!

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
Wednesday we headed to the local pumpkin patch with WAHF. I was pleased that even with a few hour break in the middle of the day, Bug was able to focus and get all his work done!

Thursday afternoon we headed to a friends' house where Bug got to play with her boys and I got to visit with her (and see her new twins!).

Friday we had science day with WAHF. We studied the plant life cycle and then made pumpkin life cycle spinners. Bug enjoyed spending the time with his friends.

My favorite thing this week was…
The focus and attention Bug spent on his Bible project. Here is his final result.

His assignment was to creatively retell one of the parables we read (he chose The Parable of the Sower) and then illustrate.  After narrating the story to me, he typed it out on the computer.  He then spent awhile on the illustration. He was very proud of the final result.

My kiddo's favorite thing this week was...
I'm guessing the LEGO KidFest he's currently at with Dad!

What’s working /not working for us…
Everything at the moment! I love that our first week went so well!

Questions/thoughts I have…
I'm curious when the other shoe is going to drop. The first week went so well, I'm wondering what's going to go wrong. Bad attitude to have, I know. I'm praying about it.

Things I’m working on…
Keeping a good attitude in ME. It's a balance to stay focused enough on what Bug is doing so I can help, but backing off enough that he's still in control of the things designed for him to do alone.

We're reading…
I'm still working on Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I love it!

As a family, we're still working on The Lord of the Rings . We've been working on this for a while, and are almost through with book 2 (or the first volume, there are 6 books in 3 volumes).

Our breakfast/lunch reading is Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Janet Gray. We are not reading very much and this is taking a while. I need to find make more time in our day for reading.

Bug is reading Matilda Bone by Karen Cushman. It was just going to be his literature read for the week, but he's enjoyed it so much it's the only thing he's been reading!

I’m grateful for…
A fabulous first week of school. My boys being able to head to LEGO KidFest. A breakfast out with my mom. Bug heading to my mom's house so hubby and I can have date night at home.

I’m praying for…
A good school year. Continued health. Friends & family who are going through trials.

I rewarded my kid this week by...
Sending him off to my mom's for the evening and following morning. He loves heading to her place! He also went swimming with her Friday morning.

Something I'm ogling or have my eye on...
I love this necklace being made as a fundraiser for the Brainerd family's adoption fundraiser!
