Homeschool Mother's Journal ~ October 20, 2013

In my life this week…
I've been struggling through being sick, dealing with allergies, and handling a sick kiddo. That and keeping up with the housework was all I could handle.

In our homeschool this week…
Second week of school and we are already behind. We managed to get much more done this week than any other 'sick week' last year, so this gives me hope for our routine.

We read about the Hundred Years' War between the English & the French. I was planning on getting through two chapters this week, but the sickies made that not happen. We read about Joan of Arc and watched some of Henry V. He was not at all thrilled with the Sheakspeare dialog.

We started science, beginning with the Scientific Method. We had fun with the Diabolical Diaper Dilemma, hypothesizing and then testing to see how much water a diaper could hold.

We also started in with NaNoWriMo. Bug was very excited to create his main character. We created an example together before he set to work on his personal character.

On our sickest day, Bug watched this really cool documentary about the Bermuda Triangle. He really enjoyed learning all the different theories and hearing about different scientific studies that have been done to prove/disprove the theories. (He also watched an episode of MythBusters - love that show!)

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
It's OK to take a sick day if you and/or your child are not feeling well.  Watch an educational video or just read, depending on the energy levels in the house. We also like half days, we get some work done but we don't push to get started early and stop when our energy is sapped.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We didn't do much all week. We didn't even make it to WAHF on Friday. We did go for a walk/bike ride one morning. We are having a beautiful fall!

By Sabbath we were feeling better and got to hang out with friends after church. That was a blast. Nothing beats an evening of food and fellowship with amazing people.

Today we went to Roloff Farms. This was a great place for some fall fun as a family. We got to take a tour of the farm, play in their adventure area, and see a baby tiger in the exotic animal tent. We also got to see Matt, Amy and Jeremy Roloff from Little People, Big World! Bug hadn't seen their show, but we are all looking forward to their next season starting at the end of the month!

My favorite thing this week was…
Sabbath evening with friends. It was a long week and that made it all better!

My kiddo's favorite thing this week was...
The same as mine! He loves being able to get together with friends!

What’s working /not working for us…
Giving Bug more control definitely helped this week. Even when I wasn't doing great, he knew what he could do and started in on it.

Things I’m working on…
Just making it through, one day at a time.

I’m reading…
I'm still working Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I'm also reading The Fourth Kingdom by Alexandra and Joyce Swann. They are both amazing and I have a hard time choosing what to read.

Bug's reading…
He finished up Matilda Bone and Alcatraz versus Scrivener's Bones. Now he's working on comics, I think, until we can get to the library for the third Alcatraz book!

I’m grateful for…
Adventures as a family. Fellowship & games with friends. Watching movies when we are too sick for school. Quick healing. Trader Joe's. Chocolate. Chai Tea.

Something I'm ogling or have my eye on...

I'm dreaming of the projects I could do with this!
