Homeschool Mother's Journal ~ Aug 10, 2013

In my life this week…
My week was categorized as home-alone-me-time or running-around-time! Bug spent Sunday afternoon - Wednesday afternoon at our church preteen camp.  He, of course, had a blast and didn't want to come home.

I spent Monday just vegging without him.  Tuesday, I grabbed my newly retired mom and we went to the Oregon Garden and then did a bit of local produce shopping.  It was wonderful to spend some mother-daughter time!

Wednesday afternoon we picked Bug up from camp and brought him home.  He was home one night and then we were out of the house to help my mom take her car into the shop.  He then went home with my mom for Thursday night and I didn't get him back until Friday afternoon!

A lot of my me-time was spent planning for next school year.  I'm trying really hard to be on top of things.  Praying that it will make the year go smoother and put us less behind!

In our homeschool this week…
We did get a little bit done while waiting for mom on Thursday.  I tried to keep it low-key considering he'd just gotten back from camp AND we weren't doing school at home. He did a little bit of math, copywork, cursive & critical thinking.  Just to keep his brain from atrophying.  In reality, he probably learned a ton at preteen camp too.  I just can't seem to get any of the lessons out of him!

My favorite thing this week was…
Spending the day with my mom! We had a lot of fun together!

My kiddo's favorite thing this week was...
I don't even have to ask - PRETEEN CAMP!

Questions/thoughts I have…
Planning next school year and wondering if 5 hours of school time a day is too much for a 10 year old?  This doesn't include breaks (but does include quiet reading time). It's only 4 days a week, with Fridays having just an hour or so worth of work in the morning before WAHF.

Things I’m working on…
Planning. Planning. And more planning.  Oh, and some organizing too!  Science is done. Math is done. Bible is done. General schedule is done. Planning/Record form is done (just needs to be copied & bound). Still need to do history {plan out our additional resources/activities} and need to pick up some additional resources for Language Arts & Bible. Here are our choices for next school year.

I’m reading…
One Breath Away by Heather Gudenkauf

Bug is reading…
He finished Hatchet last night and started on Dogsong by Gary Paulsen tonight.

I’m grateful for…
The freedom to homeschool. Bountiful food options. No serious illness in our family. Time with my mom.

I’m praying for…
One friend who's Lupus has flared up. Another who's son might have whooping cough and is supposed to be flying home Thursday and starting school the next week. Our church's Conference of Elders meetings this next week.

I rewarded my kid this week by...
A rootbeer float on the way home from preteen camp.  Not really a reward, but just because.  I also tried to reward him with bowling on Thursday after he worked to get a little bit of school done.  But the bowling alley had an event going on and we couldn't bowl.

Something I'm ogling or have my eye on...
I really would like a couple stainless steel lunch boxes for the kid and me.  These ones would be great!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
This is how I felt Wednesday after picking up Bug. My house was a disaster and there was a ton of laundry to do. But I was so happy to have him home and he was so happy to have gone to camp.
