Branch out with Book Bingo! {Free Printable}

Do your kids love reading like my boy does? I don't need to encourage Bug to read. In fact, there are times where I have to do just the opposite. (Reading and unloading the dishwasher don't work well together!) It's pretty much expected that if he's leaving the house, a book is coming with him. Car rides, even 5 minute ones to the store, are torture without a book.

In order to challenge him, I created Book Bingo. I am using this as his goal for earning a free mini-pizza from the Pizza Hut Book-It program. I was frustrated with trying to count minutes because he's always reading. Besides, trying to read a certain time frame doesn't encourage and challenge him!

The idea is that instead of reading all the same type of book {for Bug, that would be Fantasy or Comic Books}, he has to choose books from three different genres in a month. For our use, I've broken it down into the following categories:

History {Non-Fiction}
Biography {Non-Fiction}
Science {Non-Fiction}
Real Life Fiction
Historical Fiction
Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Mystery
Poetry
Award Winner (any type of award - Caldecott, Newbery, etc)
Any Genre (Free Space)

I give Bug a new Bingo card at the beginning of the month and he gets to decide which Bingo he would like to try for. Usually he'll read his own choices for the start of the month, figure out what genres they fall under and then choose another book or two to complete the bingo. He must do one bingo (3 books) in order to win his pizza.

There are two downloads. One is for the bingo cards with the book list on the back. The second download is for the folder that can be printed onto cardstock to store your bingo cards in!

I'm including a blank bingo card so that you can determine which genres you want to focus on. You can leave off non-fiction or separate the Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Mystery.  Our layout is based on what I know my child likes to read and what it's a challenge to get him to read. The 'Any Genre' is not in the middle because that makes things too easy!

You can use the Book Bingo to replace or supplement summer reading programs, Pizza Hut's Book-It or create your own system in your home.

Do your kids get stuck in the same reading ruts that Bug does? Please share with me how this helps your child branch out!
